10 CHRISTMAS AND HOLIDAY TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Having lived in London for over a decade, I often find myself reflecting on holiday traditions from around the world. The holiday season is a time of joy, reflection, and connection. As interior designers, drawing inspiration from global traditions can spark creative ideas for decorating and celebrating this festive season. Here are 10 unique Christmas and holiday traditions from around the world that can inspire your holiday home design.

Germany: Advent Wreaths (Adventskranz)

In Germany, the Advent season is marked by the creation of Adventskranz, or Advent wreaths. These wreaths are often made of evergreen branches, adorned with candles, ribbons, and ornaments. Each Sunday leading up to Christmas, a candle is lit. For your home, consider incorporating a modern twist on this tradition with a minimalistic wreath centerpiece.

Sweden: St. Lucia’s Day

On December 13, Swedes celebrate St. Lucia’s Day, where a young girl dressed in a white gown with a crown of candles leads a procession. The tradition brings light to the darkest days of winter. Integrate soft candlelight and Nordic-inspired elements like natural wood and white linens to bring this cozy aesthetic to your space.

Mexico: Las Posadas

From December 16 to 24, Mexicans celebrate Las Posadas, reenacting Mary and Joseph’s journey. Communities often host parties with piñatas, candles, and festive music. Bright colors and handmade decorations like papel picado can inspire vibrant holiday decor.

Italy: La Befana

On January 6, Italian children eagerly await La Befana, a kind witch who delivers gifts. Homes are often decorated with nativity scenes and warm, rustic accents.

Japan: Christmas Illuminations

While Christmas isn’t a traditional holiday in Japan, elaborate light displays are a seasonal highlight. Cities sparkle with dazzling illuminations, inspiring a magical atmosphere. Bring this brilliance indoors with string lights, use of mirrors, and go crazy with your outdoor landscaping!

Iceland: The Yule Lads

Iceland’s 13 mischievous Yule Lads bring humor to the holidays, leaving small gifts or tricks in children’s shoes. Similar to the new tradition of "Elf on a Shelf"

Australia: Beachside Celebrations

In the Southern Hemisphere, Christmas falls during summer. Australians celebrate with barbecues and beach outings. For a coastal twist, decorating with seashells, driftwood, and a color palette of blues and sandy neutrals is a fun way to incorporate an "Aussie" feel to the holidays! Norway: Julenisse

Norwegians celebrate with Julenisse, a Christmas gnome who delivers presents. Incorporate Scandinavian design elements like faux sheepskin throws, natural greenery, and handcrafted wooden ornaments to capture the cozy & rustic vibe.

Philippines: Giant Lantern Festival

In the Philippines, the Giant Lantern Festival showcases intricate, colorful lanterns. These stunning displays symbolize hope and light. Bring this theme into your home with bold colors in your decor and geometric patterned wrapping paper.

United Kingdom: Christmas Crackers

British Christmas tables are incomplete without Christmas crackers. These festive novelties contain small gifts, jokes, and paper crowns. Add a touch of British charm by creating a tablescape with crackers, traditional plaid patterns, and classic red-and-green decor.
