Nestled in the heart of Nantucket’s historic district, the Nantucket Captain’s House is a testament to the island’s storied past and enduring architectural beauty. Originally built in 1790, this remarkable home has stood as a silent witness to the island’s evolution—once housing China trade merchants, abolitionists, and prominent whaling captains who shaped Nantucket’s maritime legacy. Centuries later, the home remained a significant landmark, its timeworn walls preserving echoes of the past.
When Kristin Paton Interiors took on the restoration and renovation of this landmark residence, the mission was clear: to honor the home’s rich heritage while seamlessly integrating modern luxury and functionality. Every detail of the project was carefully considered, from reviving the original wide-plank pine floors to restoring the intricate millwork and paneling that had weathered decades of sea air. The design embraces the home’s Federal and Greek Revival influences, marrying historic integrity with a fresh, livable elegance suited for contemporary island life.
The interiors are a refined balance of history and comfort, where antique Nantucket baskets sit alongside custom furnishings, and maritime artifacts blend with tailored, coastal-inspired textiles. The restoration preserved key architectural elements, including original fireplaces, hand-hewn beams, and a grand central staircase that has welcomed generations of seafarers and visionaries. Thoughtful updates, such as a light-filled kitchen outfitted with handcrafted cabinetry and a modernized captain’s study, ensure the home remains as functional as it is beautiful.
Beyond its interiors, the Captain’s House extends its historical presence into meticulously restored gardens, where heirloom roses and native island plantings create an outdoor sanctuary reminiscent of its 18th-century origins.
